'Not the end of terror'

Say two former Indian intelligence officials, rejecting US claims following Laden's death

AS Dulat

Former chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and advisor to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on J&K

If this were the end of terrorism, all of us would have been celebrating out in the streets. It is easer said than done. I don't think terrorism ends here; it will continue. Osama may have been killed but don't forget that Al-Qaeda is alive and kicking.'

Terrorism is far bigger than the individual that was Osama Bin Laden and its going continue to affect people in the future too. As far as the United States of America is concerned, they feel that they have brought the perpetrator of 9/11 to justice. But you should also remember that they took ten years to do so. A lot has changed in the Al-Qaeda too over these ten years and there are many more people like Laden within the ranks. Numerous militant groups have mushroomed. So, the threat of terrorism remains.

MK Dhar
Former Jt Director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), now a renowned author

What the US has said is not correct; terrorism will continue to exist. It is a global problem and is not going to vanish anytime soon. If the United States of America is saying that terrorism will end with Osama Bin Laden then they are wrong.

Osama was a symbol for many people and he is not going to fade away so soon. There are still a lot of followers of Laden across the globe. His death is certainly not going to solve India's problems.u00a0On the contrary newer challenges will emerge. Pakistan now would mobilise their activities in Kashmir and they may facilitate more infiltration. So the Kashmir issue might become more of a headache for India than it is now.
Similarly in Afghanistan, Taliban influence will also become strengthened after this and Al-Qaeda is actually likely to become more active.
The United States may be saying this for domestic consumption. But the fight goes on.
(- As told to Mohit Sharma)
