While advertisements selling the idea of fairness creams that leave you with baby-soft skin are hogging airtime, Mumbai's infants are working hard to preserve that nascent glow. Diya Dembla has a brand new clientele segment at her just-launched skin therapy salon off Chapel Road, since she started a specialised baby skin therapy session less than a year ago. It's never too early to start taking care of your skin, she says. A practicing skin therapist since 2008, Dembla combines sound advice she heard from her grandmom with the training in baby therapy from Hong Kong to work on baby skin care.

"You have to be careful with infants. People who are not adequately trained can be risky for the baby, so I conduct the therapy myself," says Dembla who works with babies as young as six months. One-hour sessions start with cleansing, followed by a massage that ends with a warm wipe. "It takes time for the baby to get comfortable with someone new, and there needs to be warm human contact. So, I lay the baby on my lap for the treatment," says Dembla, who reserves all her Monday appointments for infant spa treatments.

The massage is known to soothe colic, restless sleep patterns, skin rashes and improve blood circulation.
So, will your traditional maalishwalli be out of business? Not yet, says Dembla, who deals with an exclusive crowd. "Professional baby therapy is still catching on in Mumbai. In Japan, when infants turn three months old, they are sent for various massages," informs Dembla.

The therapist uses only natural ingredients, which she buys fresh from the market, turning them into mixes and pastes on a daily basis. Early mornings are spent slicing, scooping and straining fresh fruits and vegetables. For exfoliation, the specialist uses mild ingredients such as papaya puree. "We also prepare a lape or a scrub with neem, wheat flour, chickpea or rice flour. The scrub use depends on the skin type of the child," explains Dembla.

Skin kitchen also offers special treatments for expecting mothers till their seventh month. This includes facials, foot massages and specialised scrubs. Will these treatments leave you with skin as soft as a baby's bottom? We hope so. Baby therapy sessions start at Rs 800 and can cost as much as Rs 4,500.
