Kaumudi Gurjar reports About a year ago, nearly 70 surveillance cameras were installed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to help book traffic offenders, beef security measures and manage traffic in the city. The ambitious Rs 14.99 crore project u2014 funded by JNURM, govt of Maharashtra and PMC, which initially got delayed by three years, finally took off in March last year. However, even though the cameras installed at important intersections and critical locations in the city are capturing minute details of traffic violations, not a single offender has been booked. And the reason behind is that the PMC is yet to award the contract to the agency that will monitor traffic offenders and deliver the challans for violating traffic rules. Not a delay Shriniwas Bonala Traffic Planner at PMC, explaining the delay, said, "It is unfair to call it a delay. This is the first of its kind project in India. There are a number of approvals required for the implementation." Bonala added that two agencies have been short-listed and their names have been forwarded to the standing committee. DCP Traffic Manoj Patil told MiD DAY, "They informed us that they were finalising the agency that would deliver the challans and the process is in its final stage." Reacting to this delay Vivek Velankar, president of Sajag Nagri Manch, told MiD DAY, "This is the best example of the miscommunication between the police and PMC. And it is utter lack of planning." According to Abraham Varghese of Keltron (Kerala Electronics Development Corporation Ltd) Kerala Government Undertaking Company, who is responsible for putting together the project, "A similar project will be implemented in Kolkata and Delhi soon."
