Coimbatore: Upset over a banner of chief minister Jayalalithaa being torn allegedly by DMDK workers recently, an AIADMK functionary at Udumalpet in nearby Tirupur district on Wednesday attempted to commit suicide by setting himself ablaze, police said.

Thangavel, AIADMK area secretary in Udumalpet, suddenly poured kerosene on his body and lit a match stick, near the party office in full public view.
