They had come to the city in 2006. The duo had financial trouble from the start, and they wanted to make a quick buck. So, they devised the easiest plan they could think of Bangalore being an education-oriented city, they would have plenty of unsuspecting students they could cheat. The fact that there is always an influx of students new to the city, their job was made easier. First they visited all prestigious colleges and collected letterheads and signatures of respective principals. Using these, they created fake admission certificates and other documents, and forged signatures of principals. Armed with fake documents, they searched for students who wanted to get admissions in city colleges. In order to lure the would-be students, the two lied that they had links with many colleges, and would ensure admission to these colleges if they gave them a particular amount. u00a0 Since the duo was fluent in Hindi and English, the students believed them, and willingly gave them money. After two days they would provide them with fake admission documents, and the now-relieved students would go back happy. But the elation was short lived. When students returned and went to their respective colleges, they realised they had been cheated." Playing safe? The duo cheated nearly 200 students this way, and went absconding three months ago. For safekeeping, they had kept over Rs 50 lakh in their relatives' accounts, knowing that one day they might be arrested. DG Halli Police Inspector BV Pradeep said, "We suspect that college staff and other students might be involved in the racket. There are many students who have not registered any cases. We are investigating and have informed other police stations also."
