Met officials predict more showers; advent of monsoon likely on June 6
The weather will get even more pleasant, Met officials said after the heavens late last evening showered relief on residents of the city after the scorching heat of last month.
Not unusual
"Moisture blowing in from the Arabian Sea and the rising temperature, which creates a low pressure belt, is behind the rain," said S B Gaonkar, director, weather, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). "This kind of rain is normal at the end of April or the first week of May. It is a local phenomenon due to the northwesterly winds."
Gaonkar said the downpour was a pre-monsoon shower.
The Met predicts that the coming couple of days are also likely to see light showers late in the evening.
High temperatures
Experts at IMD added that even though there will be light showers, the maximum temperature in the city will be close to 40 degrees Celsius.
Yesterday, the temperature was 39 degrees Celsius, and it may touch 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
The hottest day of the current season was recorded on April 16 ufffd 41.5 degrees Celsius.
Monsoon on time
"Monsoon is expected on June 6, very much on time. But it all depends on when the northwesterly winds reach Kerala. Last year it was by May 31. We will be able to get an idea in the next 10 days," said Gaonkar. "The prediction this year is 98 per cent of the average rainfall."
