Violated: Laxman (name changed to protect identity) recuperates in hospital

Drunk, dog tired and fast asleep, a 40-year-old man never realised when five young men crept in from a neighbouring room and began sodomising him one after the other.

The victim, Laxman (name changed to protect identity), is an office assistant at a lawyer's office in Tumkur, an hour's drive from the city.

On Tuesday night, he fell asleep in the balcony of his employer's first-floor office. He awoke to realise he was being sodomised only after two of the young men had already violated him.

Up against five men

"When I came to my senses, I was naked and was being sodomised," said Laxman. "Five of them were there, and from their conversation I came to know that two had already raped me."

When Laxman resisted, the accused stabbed him with a knife and threw him down to the ground from the balcony.

Now he is recovering at the district hospital, while the accused are cooling their heels in a police lock-up.

Fond of films, Laxman had watched a late night show on Monday with friends at a makeshift, tent theatre and had been unable to get his night's sleep.

A hard day's work the next day meant he could not keep his eyes open for long after dark, and soon was sleeping like a log in the balcony.

Waiting to strike

The youths, migrants from Uttar Pradesh who sources in Laxman's office said had been eying Laxman for some time, took advantage of the situation.

"Laxman has the drinking habit, and he was drunk when the accused sexually attacked him," said Pavagada Srinivas, Laxman's employer. "And that is the reason why he did not react initially."

The accused were identified by the police as Rishi, Pran, Pradeep, Raju and Rinku, all about 30 years of age and hawkers in Tumkur.
