A worker was injured after a <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/dombivli-fire-4-dead-48-injured-in-blaze-after-blast-at-chemical-factory-23350734" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">blast</a> occurred in a firecracker manufacturing unit at Terkheda in Dharashiv district of Maharashtra, an official said on Friday, reported the PTI.
The incident took place around 9.30 am at Suraj Fireworks factory in Dharashiv, he said.
"There are several licensed firecracker manufacturing units in Terkheda. A blast occurred in one of these factories. A worker named Changdev Dahavare, aged around 55 years, went to open the factory when it happened. According to eyewitnesses, a lot of gas had accumulated in the factory that led to the blast." Tehsildar of Washi taluka in Dharashiv, Rajesh Landge, told PTI.
Teams of fire safety and police are currently carrying out an investigation, he said.
"We are going to prepare a report of this incident by Saturday. After that, we will be able to tell the exact reason behind it. The impact of the blast was so strong that the entire room where it occurred collapsed," he said, according to the PTI.
The injured worker is being shifted to Maharashtra`s Latur district for further treatment, he added.
"The company does have a license to manufacture firecrackers. But we are checking other documents of the unit," Rajesh Landge said.
The incident comes a day after a boiler blast took place in Dombivli area in Maharashtra. At least nine people were killed and several others were injured in the incident.
A boiler exploded at Amudan Chemicals located in Phase 2 of Dombivli MIDC area around 1.40 pm, the impact of the explosion and the resultant blaze affected adjacent factories and houses, the officials said.
According to the PTI, the affected chemical factory produced food colours and uses peroxides that are highly reactive and unstable chemicals that can cause violent explosions under certain conditions, the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/search/National-Disaster-Response-Force-articles" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)</a> said.
According to an eyewitness, the blast was so loud that it was heard a kilometre away. Glass windows of adjoining buildings cracked while many houses in the vicinity were damaged, the PTI reported.
Thick clouds of smoke could be seen hovering over the factory and the surrounding area.
