Heavy rains lashed parts of Marathwada region in Maharashtra on the second consecutive day on Monday sending rivers in spate and inundating several areas reported the PTIKeshegaon circle in Dharashiv district recorded the highest rainfall of 105 mm in the 24 hours ending at 830 am on Monday the officials saidAn orange alert has been issued for Beed and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar while a yellow alert has been sounded for Nanded Latur Dharashiv Parbhani Hingoli and Jalna for MondayHeavy rainfall was recorded in 32 revenue circles across Beed Latur Dharashiv Parbhani and Hingoli districtsA day earlier an intense wet spell affected seven villages in Hingoli districtThe officials said that two women from Gunda village of Vasmat drowned in flowing water and died as per the PTIThe average rainfall in the Marathwada region comprising eight districts since June this year has been recorded at 676 mm which is 79 mm above the average rainfallCopious rains have boosted the water stock in eleven major irrigation projects in the region to 9436 per cent The water storage stood at 8932 per cent on the same day last year according to the PTIWater is discharged at the rate of 151 lakh cusecs from ten irrigation projects with the highest discharge of 91854 cusecs underway from the Vishnupuri dam in Nanded officials added the news agency reportedMeanwhilethe India Meteorological Department IMD has issued a series of weather alerts across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Konkan belt for Monday warning of widespread rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms lightning and gusty windsMumbai Thane and Palghar districts are under an orange alert with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places along with thunderstorms lightning and gusty winds These conditions are considered very likely raising the risk of disruptions to daily life particularly in lowlying and floodprone areasIn Raigad a red alert the highest level of warning has been issued The district is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms lightning and strong winds The IMD has warned of a heightened risk of flooding landslides and major traffic disruptions in the regionRatnagiri is also under an orange alert with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall thunderstorms and gusty winds Though no red alert has been declared authorities warn of possible waterlogging reduced visibility and disruption to road and rail traffic especially in vulnerable areasIn Sindhudurg a yellow alert has been issued The district is expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning heavy rainfall and gusty winds 30ndash40 kmph at isolated locations The IMD warns of shortduration intense showers which may cause localised flooding and minor structural damageMeanwhile in the Western Ghats region the ghats of Pune are under a red alert while the ghats of Satara have been placed under an orange alert owing to the likelihood of intense rainfall activity in hilly terrain posing additional risks such as landslides and road blockageswith PTI inputs
