With no police or RTO control, auto drivers in Dhayri flatly refuse short-distance fares, won't go by meter

Yesterday being a Sunday and also the auspicious day of Akshay Trutiya as per the Hindu calendar, Puneites were busy celebrating the day. The number of autorickshaws in the old city area was fewer compared to other days.

The campaign was successful on Dandekar Bridge joining Sinhagad Road and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in Navi Peth.

When the MiD DAY team asked autorickshaw drivers to go to Pune railway station and Bhandarkar Road, they agreed immediately.

Eight drivers refused to go to the nearby Neelayam cinema. Sinhagad Road Dhayri area had more autorickshaws.

Dhayri, which comes under the jurisdiction of Pune rural police was complete chaos. The drivers don't use meter in that area and charge exorbitant money.

They charge Rs 30 to Rs 40 to go from Dhayri Phata to Dhayri Gaon. Neither the police nor the RTO has any control over there on the drivers.

This is an exclusive number given by traffic police to MiD DAY readers to register refuse-to-fare complaints.
