"My parents have been looking for a girl for quite sometime now but none of the girls want an NRI. I'm already in my 31st year and my friends tease me saying I'll probably settle down only by 40. ometime ago NRI boys were a major pull but now its really tough," says Santhosh, who works in Washington DC. "Because of the global meltdown and insecurity of jobs, the market for NRI boys has gone down by about 15 per cent," said Vivek Khare, senior vice-president at Jeevansathi. Those in the business of facilitating marriages have statistics to confirm this trend. Online matrimonial services provider Bharat matrimony. com saw a 20 per cent reduction in responses for NRI grooms in 2008 (nearly a fifth of its new registrations are by NRIs). Also, women have become more aware of the fact that life as an NRI isn't always a bed of roses. Kalpana Uberoi says, "The media has created awareness about issues in NRI marriages. Today, women are cautious when it comes to NRI grooms." Deepak Dhansoia, a Gujrati says "More than the girls the families are scared. Due to some stray cases of harassment and all that. People have started to think NRI men are jerks. Though my parents have found a girl, the girl's family wants me to settle down in India." Add to that, job loss and parents are reluctant to consider a marriage proposal with such boys, said Rani Ratnakar, a marriage consultant.u00a0 "There have been cases where the couple was engaged and then the boy lost his job. In such cases, the onus is on the boy to assure the girls' parents about his security," adds Rani.
