Students seeking admission to junior colleges neglect Arts for Science and Commerce streams

Deputy Director of Education
On the last day of completing online forms for Std XI centralised admission procedure (CAP), a total of 60,303 students submitted their junior college preferences yesterday. Though stream-wise bifurcation has not yet been generated by the CAP committee, Science and Commerce are in demand this year too, as Arts continues to lose its charm for the city (see box).
Intake capacity
Stream 2013 2014 Difference
>> Arts 12,140 10,840 1,300 (Drop)
>> Commerce 26,920 28,715 1,795 (Rise)
>> Science 25,440 28,110 2,670 (Rise)
“Most of the new proposals to start self-finance junior colleges are for Science and Commerce streams. With these proposals, 2,080 Science seats and 1,600 Commerce seats have been added this year in the CAP,” Balasaheb Ovhal, assistant director, Pune division (education), said.
