Swine flu claims 13th life in city

Bina Sanjay Gonsalvis (36) became the 13th Punekar to succumb to H1N1 (influenza A) virus when she passed away last night at 11.15 at Sassoon Hospital.

Bina Sanjay Gonsalvis (36) became the 13th Punekar to succumb to H1N1 (influenza A) virus when she passed away last night at 11.15 at Sassoon Hospital.

Gonsalvis, a resident of Viman Nagar, was tested for H1N1 virus at Naidu Hospital on August 13 and immediately referred to Sassoon Hospital, where she was admitted on the same day with fever, headache and cough. Her test reports confirming the infection arrived on August 15.

The hospital authorities said, "Her condition was critical since the time of admission."

She was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit and put on ventilator. However, she developed Acute Respiratory Disorder System and succumbed to the virus.

As of today, seven patients are critically ill from the H1N1 virus in hospitals across the city, of which two are in Sassoon Hospital.

According to official sources, 181 patients are currently being treated for the virus in the city.
