The city police are doing the rounds of banks regularly to alert security guards, following a rise in instances of robbery and chain snatching.

The increasing crime is being linked to massive unemployment caused by the economic downturn. A team led by Police Inspector Chandrakant Jadhav from Vishrambaug police station was seen alerting guards posted at banks located in Sadashiv, Narayan and Shaniwar Peth areas yesterday.

The increased vigil follows a cash-snatching incident that took place on Wednesday noon near Kunjir Talim, near Annabhau Sathe School in Sadashiv Peth.

Arrested

Recently, the police arrested Mohsin Mazhar Sheikh (25), who was allegedly trying to run away with cash worth Rs 1 lakh from Chhatrapati Shrirame, an employee of a private firm in the city.

"Sheikh beat up Shrirame and almost succeeded in running away with the booty. He was, however, caught by a traffic constable when Shrirame cried out for help," Investigating Officer PSI H Y Pathan said.
