Twenty-two-year-old Zia-ur-Rehman, arrested for his alleged involvement in the September 13 Delhi serial blasts, plans to forward his request to the High Court to let him appear in the Final Year graduation examination in Bachelor of Arts (BA) of Jamia Millia University. "We will ask the court to let Rehman take the examination as soon as the dates are announced," said his advocate MS Khan. Rehman, who was a regular student at the varsity before he was arrested from Batla House, is preparing for the examination. "He is studying hard to secure good marks so that in case he is acquitted, he wouldn't have to run around for a job," said Khan, adding that the required books will be sent to Rehman within a few days. But Rehman is not alone. At Tihar, many prisoners are pursuing higher education. "The jail manual mentions that a prisoner has the right to education and many want to take advantage of this,"said Khan. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court accepted the plea of Saquib Nisar, one of the Indian Muhahideen terrorists arrested for the September 13 serial blasts, to appear in the third semester examination of his MBA course conducted by the Sikkim Manipal University. It directed the varsity and the jail officials to make proper arrangements for his examination. "No person can be denied his liberty except by the procedure of law. And as the trial against Saquib has not yet started and his detention alone doesn't prove his crime, he has a lot of time to study. He studies eight to ten hours daily," said Saquib's advocate Vikash Padora. Prison ki pathshala In a similar case, Nalini Murugan, the woman accused of assassinating former PM Rajiv Gandhi, completed a three-year Masters of Computer Applications from the Indira Gandhi National Open University in 2007. She secured a First Class. Nalini is lodged at the Chennai central jail.
