<img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/jan/Mumbai-Safe_1.jpg" style="width: 150px; height: 293px; float: left;" />The growing incidents of crime and violence against womenin the country, including molestation bids against lady constables in the city, have prompted their seniors to arm them with a few tricks up their sleeves. The Mumbai police has decided to train its women constables in taekwondo, a martial art that originated in Korea. The first batch of 40 Women Police Constables (WPCs) are being trained by the Mumbai Taekwondo Association, under the watchful eyes of national level fighters. &ldquo;The first batch of 40 women police constables are being taught every step of the martial art, as they not only have to be self-dependent, but also need to help other people,&rdquo; said Vijay Kadam, police inspector of Central Region. The programme is being carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police, Central Region, Praveen Salunkhe and is the brainchild of 26/11 hero Sadanand Date who faced-off with Ajmal Kasab in Cama Hospital. &ldquo;Women are mentally and emotionally stronger than men, but they need to be physically strong, especially since they are police constables,&rdquo; said Neha Nalawade, a trainer and a national level taekwondo fighter. &ldquo;We are being given 200 ml of milk, two eggs and biscuits on days we have sessions. Training will help us to be self-dependent and be advantageous when others need our help,&rdquo; said constable Sunaina Avachat. Many WPCs have been facing molestation attempts or have been assaulted by miscreants in the recent past. Training them in taekwondo will help to increase their self-confidence besides making them more efficient police personnel. &ldquo;A lady police constable, who had enlisted for taekwondo training earlier, caught hold of a person who had attacked a woman in Shivadi last week,&rdquo; Kadam said. <img alt="" src="http://images.mid-day.com/2013/jan/lady-cops.jpg" style="width: 500px; height: 247px;" /> Crooks beware: The first batch being trained by the Mumbai Taekwondo Association, under the watchful eyes of national level fighters Attacks on women cops &gt;&gt; The police managed to arrest a person, who molested a traffic constable in December at Matunga, after he touched her inappropriately while grabbing her badge and fleeing. &gt;&gt;u00a0During the protest on August 11 at Azad Maidan over the killings in Assam, protestors had allegedly molested six women constables. &gt;&gt;u00a0A police inspector had molested a woman in Worli during the police recruitment process.
