Gurgaon may proudly claim to be the millennium city but it's certainly not safe for women.
In the latest incident of crime against the fairer sex, a 22-year-old girl from the Northeast was raped in one of the plush residential complexes of Gurgaon. Anita (name changed) had been working for two months as a domestic help. But she had lost her job recently and was looking for a new one. On Tuesday night, a resident of Gurgaon lured her with a job offer to a flat in the premium Greenwood City in Sector 40 and raped her.
Anita, belonging to a tribal community in Assam, resides at Sikenderpur in Gurgaon with her friends. According to the police, she met the accused, Manish, who runs an automobile shop in Gurgaon, through a common friend.
On the night of the incident, Manish drove the victim to Greenwood City in his car on the pretext of getting her a job. There, she was offered alcohol and was asked to wear inappropriate clothes. However, when she denied, Manish gave her a soft drink laced with sedatives and raped her.
"The victim told us that she was raped the whole night and was later dumped with Rs 100," said a police official.u00a0u00a0
After a complaint was lodged by a Northeast helpline centre, the police registered a case against Manish and arrested him. The members of the helpline organisation and others from the Northeast have decided to meet the Gurgaon commissioner of police and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda over the safety of women in Gurgaon.
"Sikenderpur village is mostly inhabited by people from the Northeast. We have come across many complaints of women being assaulted in the last few months. Last month, two girls were beaten up by their landlord when they refused to get intimate with him. Besides, eve-teasing is also increasing in the city. So we are meeting the commissioner of police on Friday to request him to provide adequate security measures," said Madhu Chandra, a spokesperson of the Northeast helpline centre.
