Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday night after masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and vandalised property on the campus. Students in Mumbai also took to the streets for a protest at Gateway of India at midnight and continued till Monday morning.
Among prominent people, politician Zeeshan Siddique, Bollywood Actress Konkona Sen Sharma were also available at the protest. Former JNU students Umar Khalid and Kunal Kamra were part of the group which also held a candlelight vigil to show solidarity with JNU students.
Youngsters, mostly students from different city colleges, assembled on the pavement across Hotel Taj near the Gateway of India to condemn the violence. The students read poems and held candles and mobiles with flashes on to symbolise their protest against the brutality on students in JNU. Placards with "We stand with JNU", "Stop attacks on students" written on them were also seen.
Nearly thirty-four people admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre after the violence at the JNU were discharged on Monday morning. Four out of the 34 people, which included faculty and students of JNU, had minor head injuries, while others had abrasions, fracture and lacerations on the forehead among others.
An FIR has been registered at Vasant Kunj (North) Police Station in connection with the violence that took place in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Sunday. The police will also take cognisance of the CCTV footage.
