Couple cancels Haj plan, donates land for 'Life Mission' project

Aranmula residents Jasmine and Haneefa were making arrangements for their long-cherished dream of going on haj and were prepared to sell their land to raise funds for the trip when they had second thoughts. Instead, the couple, married for over three decades, decided to donate its 28-cent ancestral land to LIFE Mission, the State government's flagship housing scheme for the landless. The couple's decision came after it saw the plight of a neighbour-family living on rented premises and found it difficult to cremate the body of a family member who died recently. "We were planning to sell our property and use the funds for haj pilgrimage. But, in the past couple of months, we saw some incidents in which certain families find it difficult to cremate their family members as they don't own a property. Such incidents made us rethink our Haj plans," Haneefa told PTI. He said recently, a person passed away in his locality and a community leader donated his four cents of land to that family to conduct last rites and cremation."After that incident, we decided to make use of the land to help the needy instead of going for haj," Haneefa said. Local Self-Government Minister M V Govindan hailed the decision of the couple and said it was an inspiration to society. Minister Govindan said the couple was an inspiration to the forward journey of society which needs to embrace every human being. "People like Haneefa and Jasmine have set an example of humanity and are role models for society," Govindan said. Health Minister Veena George on Sunday visited the house of 57-year-old Haneefa and received the agreement to hand over the property for the Life Mission from the couple on behalf of the Aranmula Grama panchayat. The land, owned by 48-year-old Jasmine, was received under the 'manasodithiri mannu' campaign of the Left government, Govindan said. "Till now, the government has received 926.75 cents of land in 13 locations for the Life Mission scheme. Also in 30 locations, 830.8 cents of land have been assured for the Life Mission. The project has also received a sponsorship of Rs 25 crore to construct 1,000 houses," the Minister said. Govindan said he hopes more people would come forward to help the poor and draw inspiration from the couple. The Left government has till now handed over 2,95,006 houses to beneficiaries under the Life Mission scheme, he said. He also added that 34,374 houses are currently under construction. There are 27 housing complexes that are also under construction, he said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 10-year-old skater girl from Mumbai climbs Everest base camp

In a rare accomplishment, 10-year-old skater Rhythm Mamania from Mumbai became one of the youngest Indian mountaineers to climb the Everest base camp, a trek which she completed in 11 days. Her parents - Harshal and Urmi - accompanied her during the trek earlier this month. "Rhythm, a Class 5 student from MET Rishikul Vidyalaya in suburban Bandra, reached the Everest base camp on May 6 at around 1 pm," her mother Urmi told PTI on Sunday. The base camp is situated at 5,364 metres and it took 11 days for her to complete the expedition, she said. Rhythm, a resident of Worli, said, "Skating ring or base camp summit, it's the determination that gets you a long way." "Along with skating, trekking has always been my passion, but this trek taught me how important it is to be a responsible trekker and also solve the mountain waste management problem," she added. Her mother said Rhythm loved scaling mountains from the age of five and her first long trek was 21-km Dudhsagar and since then, she has climbed a few peaks in the Sahyadri ranges like Mahuli, Sondai, Karnala and Lohagad. She added that during the base camp trek Rhythm walked for 8-9 hours at various steep terrain in varying climatic conditions, which included lashing of hailstones and snowfall, and in temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius. The girl had gone to the base camp with 'Satori Adventures', which is a Nepal-based company along with a group of Kutch trekkers. "After reaching the base camp, other members of the group decided to take the helicopter on the way back, but Rhythm insisted that she would walk down. And hence four of us decided to descend it," Urmi said.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. From 'Penis to Vagina': Tennis fans notice drastic changes in Madrid Open trophy

Tennis fans witnessed drastic changes in the Madrid Open trophy after the Masters 1000 tournament concluded with Ons Jabeur and Carlos Alcaraz reigning supreme at the clay-court event. The 2022 Madrid trophy reminded fans of a vagina and netizens further also noted that the previous trophy resembled a penis, with one user joking that it had 'switched gender'. "They went from danger dildo straight to vulva. no one does it like madrid, truly," one user on Twitter wrote after the trophy was unveiled while other added: "What in the cunnilingus is this trophy?" One tennis fan was so upset with a new design that they wrote: "Nooooo I want the spiky d**** back." "Is it just me or does the new Mutua Madrid Open Trophy look like a Vagina?" one fan tweeted after Ons Jabeur lifted her first WTA 1000 trophy, while another said: "The Madrid vagina trophy ... it's too much." The Madrid earlier had a Roland Iten-designed statuette that was introduced in 2011 for the tournament's 10th anniversary. The 430 mm high-trophy was modelled around a staircase that Iten came across at a winery in the Spanish countryside. The trophy itself weighs 7.5 kilograms - 6.5 of which are pure gold and has 96 individual, hand-finished components including 32 racquet-shaped stairs with names of tennis legends inscribed around them and 33 diamonds (10.9 carats). The newly-designed Arete sculpture trophy, which according to tennis fans resembled a 'vagina', is created by artist David Rodriguez Caballero, especially for the champion of the 20th edition in Madrid. In the men's singles final on Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz beat defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-1 to win his maiden Madrid Open title. This was the first win for the 19-year-old Spaniard over Alexander Zverev in three attempts, and he has now won 10 consecutive matches. While in the women's singles final, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia clinched the Madrid Open title with a thrilling win over Jessica Pegula on Saturday, to become the first Arab player to win a WTA Masters 1000 event. Ons Jabeur overcame the American 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 in just under two hours. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
