Party time: Most guys just wanted to spend time with people who were close and who mattered to their lives during the New Year celebrations.u00a0 fileu00a0 pic</td></tr></tbody></table>The New Year hangovers are just tapering off. The resolutions have all just been broken. (Except by a few people slightly more strong willed than me.)u00a0u00a0 The bars are filling up once again. The cigarette sales have stabilised again.u00a0 And the new gym clothes are once again being moved to the back of the cupboard. Even as the snooze buttons on alarms simply get shut off.u00a0 "So what did you do for New Year?" I ask people "Nothing ya, just sat at home," somebody shrugged. Another one drawled, "Nothing much man, just went to a friend's place." "Oh just watched TV," a third went.u00a0u00a0 "What's the point of New Year?" someone asks. "It's just marketing hype to party wildly." The disgruntlement aside, this year, the joie de vivre, the pizazz and the spirit of auld land syne seemed to be sorely missing. Five star hotels and cool hangout lounges dropped their usually hefty entry prices, so they could draw in the stray couple or so, who still wanted to go out and let their hair down.u00a0 Everybody was just heaving a collective sigh of relief that 2008; and the worst year in recent history; was over. From now on, things could get only better. The economy had to look up. We were slightly better guarded from terrorist strikes across the border. And our sensex just had to go upwards: it couldn't go lower than rock bottom, now could it? But gone were the hectic plans of downing as much free champagne as one could, before the clock struck twelve (and the cops barged in.) Gone were the mimosa breakfasts for the morning after. And gone were the usual hectic shopping and primping and 'parlouring' and blowdrying, that happens before the big 31st do.u00a0 A few things had changed for the better however, while everybody just sat at home, or went to friends' places, or perhaps to a farmhouse with close friends. 2008 was over. But it was clear while ringing in the new, most guys just wanted to spend time with people who were close and who mattered to their lives. Not the usual boisterous, rowdy lot of tequila-ed strangers, one has to fight to get to the bar. Not the loud sloshed, slurring happy new year, one used to go around airkissing to.u00a0 Next year, the rowdiness and the verve would probably have bounced back. The DJs will be spinning overtime. And the cocktails will be overflowing. The party will go on. It has to.u00a0 Because 2009 is going to be good for all of us.
