England fans again booed and heckled Ricky Ponting after the home team's resounding defeat at Headingley on Sunday but they saved their most abusive for their own captain Andrew Strauss.
A section of the crowd greeted the Aussie skipper with the loud boos and jeers that have become customary during this Ashes series, as he walked up for the presentation ceremony.
A drunken fan shouted: "Go home Ponting" while another screamed at the victorious captain "p... off".
However, Strauss received the most vitriolic abuse with one fan screaming "You are a f...... disgrace". Others called for him to be sacked.
Former England captain David Gower, who is now a television commentator, was so embarrassed he made an on-air apology to viewers.
Ponting diplomatically said he didn't have anything to say to the abusive English fans.
"Not really," was his laconic comment. "there is (sic) a few Aussie supporters here that have cheered us on a little bit over the last few days."
