This is understandable, because we live in times when topicality is important and days like these need to be remembered and marked. And yet, one wonders what can be done to keep Gandhigiri, or Gandhism, his ideology and ways of truth and living relevant all year around.
The filmmaker of Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which created such a sensation in Bollywood and revived interest in Gandhigiri, admitted that one of the reasons he made the movie was because he realised that the younger generation simply had no idea who Bapu was, let alone know about his ideology.
Munna Bhai fired up the imagination of a nation and suddenly, for all kinds of reasons, Gandhigiri was in vogue. People were responding to modern day crises and problems with Gandhigiri — or non-violence — offering roses to persons responsible for a situation that may have irked them or other such peace offerings instead of conflicts and violence.
While sequels to the movie have appeared and there are reports that there are more sequels planned, there has to be concerted effort to keep Gandhigiri alive. Gandhi needs to be weaved in with contemporary living, so that he and his ideology are not consigned to history.
Gandhigiri on Skype, Mahatma Gandhi apps on Blackberry are just two possible ways to keep him in mind all year round; Gandhi style padyatras for fitness or peace could also work. Tweak Gandhigiri to modern times. Keep Bapu and Gandhigiri trending, to keep his appeal alive.u00a0
