Hard times for Gadkari

Despite senior party leaders LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj backing his stand in asking for a probe into allegations against him, troubles are far from over for BJP president Nitin Gadkari. His party, which was gearing up to corner Congress on the issue of corruption, has been forced to adopt a similar line of defence for its president as the one used by leaders from the grand old party for Robert Vadra. Gadkari appears to have lost face with potentially damning evidences emerging against Purti Power and Sugar Ltd, which he headed till a few months ago. Having been at the receiving end of BJP’s anti-corruption onslaught, Congress demanded a probe into Gadkari’s business ventures.

According to reports, at least 18 firms had transferred funds into Purti over a period of time. It is suspected that many of these are shell companies owned by Gadkari himself.

The BJP president has very little to explain as the investors are difficult to trace and headquarters shown by them are actually slums and chawls, where present occupants deny existence of such companies.

Till a few days ago Gadkari appeared with a confident face to tell the nation that Purti Group was working in the interest of farmers from Vidarbha region, unfortunately known as the suicide zone of the country. But the revelations have now forced him to shy away from the public eye.

Before shifting to Delhi as the BJP chief, at the behest of RSS, Gadkari was projected as the young leader with a potential to revive the party that was looking for a fresh face. In the last two and half years, Gadkari invited wrath of Congress leaders for making some scathing remarks against Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul. But, now the shoe is on the other foot.u00a0
