Hats off to the Paggi people

Basic human instincts and alertness has become such a rarity in these modern times. During a recent assignment in Kutch,u00a0Gujarat, I stumbled upon a beautiful community, specialising in human intelligence, and on whom the police relied upon for cracking cases.

In rural India, where crimes such as robberies and thefts are very common, the police do not have access or the infrastructure to depend on scientific and forensic tests. Each time a crime occurs, the local police hires a paggi (a community which has developed a strong sixth sense and alertness) and visit the spot.

A quick recee of the place and after seeking answers to basic questions, the paggi draws up a list of suspects.

The community was hired by the nawabs and kings in ancient India to crack open crimes and spot the culprits.

Paggis, as a community are those who consciously develop all their five senses so as to draw a list of suspects.
I saw a local narrating their importance ufffd they can spot what almost everyone would overlook, either taking for granted or not being alert enough.

"He can spot footprints on the wall, spot a strand of hair and even smell the odour of the person who must have visited the scene of crime," explained a local. "Their senses are developed and the police depend on them to crack open cases," he added.

However, this community is waning as they are searching for better livelihood options. The modern breed of policemen do not cultivate them enough.

I was amazed by these men and they made me wonder if we had lost our alertness due to the mundane urban life.

A little alertness and perhaps we too can spot what is not the obvious.
