Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

'In London, rioters are looting television sets, going home and watching themselves loot television sets on looted television sets.'

That seemingly absurd tweet, from someone simply called Joy, was one of millions that made the English capital a trending topic in the wake of riots that swept across it.

Hugh Platt, presumably a Londoner, commented: '[Prime Minister] Cameron says it is clear things are badly wrong in our society.

That it took a city on fire for him to notice speaks volumes.' Watski added, 'Wonder at what point the link between more police and less crime will jump up and smack Cameron between the eyes.'

There was also this amusing update from Chris: 'I heard an Apple store was looted. They are looking for an iWitness.'

Straight off the bat
He came, saw, and failed to conquer. Virender Sehwag's dismissal off the first ball, after his much-hyped appearance, got him a lot of attention.

None of it was good. A certain Will Davies tweeted: 'Sehwag was just keeping his bat fresh for smashing rioting numbskulls.'

FakingNews had this update: 'This innings was brought to you by the government's Lokpal Bill.' Farhad Hamza had a question for the cricketer: 'Did you take a 13-hour flight to do this?'

And someone called Sambha made this interesting comparison: 'It was like you called your big brother in a high school fight, but he got beaten up too.'

Reel life warnings
Samples of 'scary movie rules to live by ufffd' according to the folk online: 1. 'If you hear a strange noise, stay put.' 2. 'If you're in a house in the dark and say "Hello? Anyone there?", the killer isn't going to reply. So run.'

The last word
Courtesy actor Boman Irani: After a sleepless night, I tend to make 'wise' faces in the morning; almost like 'while you morons were sleeping, I solved the world's problems!'
