Rajnikanth to Himalaya's rescue

Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

The mighty Himalayas made their presence felt across Twitter timelines today, following reports of satellite images revealing 75 per cent of glaciers on the retreat. A whole lot of people simply complained ineffectually, but a certain Gaurav Shukla had a dubious solution: 'Only Rajnikanth can stop them now,' he tweeted. The rest of us live in hope.

He who blinks first
'HRB' and 'Yeddy' were also big trending topics. For those lucky enough to have no access to our news channels, the references are to Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj and Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. Bhardwaj recommended President's rule in the state, the BJP convened an emergency party meeting to discuss this and, naturally, a dharna was staged. Someone called Kiran Kumar, presumably one of the state's many jaded residents, had a question for Sonia, Moily, Abdullah and HRB: 'If Karnataka is in a state of crisis, why did the UPA award Yeddyurappa the Best Law & Order State Award?'

All at sea
What would we do without Johnny Depp? Precious little, one would imagine, considering the massive outpouring of love shoved his way by women across the planet. They did this in honour of the latest instalment of that lucrative money-maker titled Pirates of the Caribbean, which hits screens this week. Expect poor Captain Jack Sparrow impressions from friends over the coming weeks.

Pants on fire
'Top 10 Lies' was an interesting hashtag with equally interesting responsesu00a0-- from 'I'm on my way' and 'I never even said that' to, worryingly, 'I have read and agreed to the terms of condition.'

The last word
Aspiring filmmaker cum aspiring philosopher Ram Gopal Varma came up with this in the wee hours: 'Still waters run deep, but they also become dirty and breed mosquitoes.' If he decides to write a book, I intend to not buy it.
