Making sense of the good, bad and often strange trending topics online

Times are a-changing

The Twitter isn't half as popular with teenagers as it is with adults. This may be why Bob Dylan became a trending topic on the day he turned 70. Then again, the release of an interview admitting he was a heroin addict may have helped. Either way, while thousands sent him messages of love and listed their favourite tracks, a certain Heinrich Pelser had this to say: "Anyone with lyrics such as 'how many times must a man turn his head' is obviously on acid! A man turns his head many times."

Jairam's report card
Jairam Ramesh, the IITs and IIMs clogged timelines following the minister's critical comments on the quality of research at those institutions. Writer Chetan Bhagat responded with this: 'Before Ramesh talks about IIT/IIM faculty being world class, he should comment on whether our politicians are.' Interestingly, he followed that with this: 'Personally, I don't know if the IIT/IIM faculty is world-class or not, but some of their daughters totally are.'

Will truth prevail?
The trial of David Headley made him an object of attention after he testified that the ISI had provided support to Lashkar-e-Taiba to carry out the 26/11 attacks. Someone called Aditya Verma tweeted: 'At least they're making progress in the US. If it was India alone, we wouldn't have even known of Headley and Rana.' The government has made us all cynics.

Storm chasing
A tornado in Joplin, Missouriu00a0-- reportedly the deadliest since the 1950su00a0-- led to messages of sympathy flooding timelines. Chat show celebrity Ellen DeGeneres tweeted: 'I can only imagine how they feel. I'm sending all the love I can.' I think she should send money instead.

The last word
This, from filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar: 'Some people are so fake, even Barbie dolls are jealous.' It could be a reference to all the actors he's worked with over the years.
