People who work for him and other guys who habitually split a root beer or three with him, tell me the bloke is rather sharp. "Well-informed" they call him. "Intelligent" they tag him. "Perceptive" they label him. When he let it drop casually that he was here to check out a new company he had invested in, it seemed rather like just another boring business trip ufffd although he did jet in with more paparazzi and security than the average rock star, and the hotel he stayed in had the presidential suite all spiffed up for him. However, two sips of root beer later, the guy confessed that he was also here, to get richie fat cats in India to part with their moolah for charity. "Well-informed"? "Intelligent"? "Perceptive"? Ha! "Stupido." "Duffer" "Dunderhead". More like. I stared at him for two beats, shocked, and rapidly ordered something stronger than the root beer. I had visions of my friend Warren going off to people like the Reddy brothers and politely asking them to donate to the poor. "Take a cause" he would tell them. "Help starving children or abused women. Alleviate poverty and aid education" he would extort them. The Reddy brothers would look at Warren's measly stash of billions and check out their considerably healthier pile (all unaccounted for by Forbes, of course) ufffd and vacillate over whether the Association of Advantaged Miners was a charity he approved of. The Southern Suns of Karuna and his kin, which includes three-fourths of the industries of Kollywood production, Chennai construction, Madras mediadom and Tamil Nadu Telecom, are some of the very few who have decided to give generously to charity. Karuna is supposed to have said, "I am completely agreeing with you and giving one kg rice, one colour tv and one sari per family." Mr Buffet is rumoured to have asked him why he didn't add free education to the list. But then, the average Venkatesh on the road would get too smart to vote the octogenarian back into power then, wouldn't he? On his trip to Delhi, Warren is supposed to have met Delhi industrialists, all of whom were of the opinion it was better to treat themselves as their personal charities. One heavily made up Mrs did admit, however, that she gave away all of last season's Vuittons to a not-so-fortunate cousin. "Charity enough!", she sniffed. Warren, for reasons known only to him, skipped a visit to Antilia to discuss charitable causes.
