This paper recently spotlighted a runner who is collecting funds for girls through a charity that empowers women through sport. This runner aims to run 21 km in the Tata Mumbai Marathon. What is remarkable, though, is that this man is a cardiac survivor himself. He stated that he was inspired to work for the cause because he had seen a significant gap between boys and girls in terms of sporting opportunities. While usually, the former were given the freedom to go out and play, the latter were at times denied that, and in that way, dreams were snuffed out and talent was choked.
Let us give our girls the opportunity to go out and play. They may not make the competitive cut, but still, it is empowering to claim your right to public space. They, too, have the right to enjoy the outdoors sans the fear of being judged, harassed, or chastised. We may even have a champion amidst our midst.
