It was yet another fail for Mumbai University (MU), after it announced examinations for MSc students without bothering to hold a single lecture in nearly three months. Even as the students pointed out to the varsity that they were unprepared, the administration merely asked them to collect their hall tickets.

Following a front-page report in this paper, MU has finally postponed the exams, but one fails to understand how the authorities had expected students to appear for an exam when they weren't taught anything. It is also important that the university keep tabs on whether lectures are being taken or not. A senior official from the examination department said they were not aware of the status of lectures, but this cannot be an excuse to shock students in this manner. The university should be aware of the goings-on.
It is also shocking that despite having postponed the exams once earlier for the same reason, the varsity still did not schedule lectures. Students, too, must complain to the university, rather than rest complacent in the belief that lectures will eventually be held or that the exams will be postponed altogether.
For too long, our youngsters have been disillusioned by a disorganised system. One primary reason for the brain drain from our nation is that bitterness and disappointment sets in during the academic years. Every academic institution - and the Mumbai University first and foremost - must clean up its act and gets its house in order. This unnecessary, and frankly ludicrous, situation should not have occurred in the first place.
Students face a huge amount of stress and challenges in the outside world. Let us not add to their already crushing burden with such goof-ups.
