The police commissioner in charge of the case, Wesley Almeida, said that the remains found Sunday will be subjected to forensic examinations to verify whether they really are those of the six missing children from Luziania, a town located 66 km from the Brazilian capital. However, he added that from the police point of view "the investigation has ended", since "we have a confession and the bodies". The disappearance of the six teenagers, between 13 and 16 years of age and all neighbours living in the same part of town, occurred during the first two weeks of January. Police said that they zeroed in on the alleged murderer because one of the several routes of investigation was that a paedophile could be responsible. After reviewing the backgrounds of the residents of the city who had served time in prison, police determined that the only person who had been convicted of sexual crimes was De Jesus, who was then monitored over the past 10 days. The key element in his arrest was the judicially-authorised tapping of his telephone, as a result of which police discovered that the man had given a girl a cellphone that had belonged to one of the missing teenagers.
