Libya's deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi was injured and captured Thursday by fighters of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) in Sirte, said a field commander.

According to agency and TVu00a0reports, a senior NTC official, Abdel Majid Mlegta, was quoted as saying that the former dictator had succumbed to his injuries.

Field commander Mohemmed Buras Ali Al-Maknee told Xinhua that a group of fighters from the western Libyan city of Misrata captured Gaddafi, who was severely injured, in Sirte.

Sirte is Gaddafi's birthplace.
