Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), researchers from the University of Cambridge have discovered the oldest black hole ever observed, located in the GN-z11 galaxy. This black hole formed just 400 million years after the Big Bang and challenges current theories about black hole formation due to its immense size, which is a few million times the mass of the Sun. Typically, supermassive black holes are thought to grow over billions of years. Still, this discovery suggests alternative formation methods, such as being ‘born big’ or consuming matter at an unexpectedly high rate.

Depression may make you fat

A study published in PLOS ONE revealed that increases in depression symptoms are linked to a subsequent rise in body weight one month later, specifically in individuals with overweight or obesity. The research, part of the Fenland COVID-19 Study, involved over 2,000 adults in Cambridgeshire, UK. The study found that each increment increases in depressive symptoms corresponded to a weight gain of 45 a month later. This effect was significant in overweight or obese individuals but not in those with a healthy weight.

Leaf generators for power

Researchers have come up with a novel way to produce electricity by developing “power plants”—small, leaf-shaped generators that create energy from wind and rain. The team, led by Ravinder Dahiya, created two types of energy collectors: a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for wind energy and a droplet-based energy generator (DEG) for rain.
