<p align="center"><span style="font-size: 8pt"><strong>In danger:</strong> Queen Elizabeth during that 1970 trip to Australia</span></p></td></tr></tbody></table>Britain's Queen Elizabeth II escaped disaster in 1970 when a large log was placed on a track to derail her train as she travelled across Australia, a retired detective has revealed. <br /><br />Former New South Wales state detective superintendent Cliff McHardy (81) said the Queen and her husband were travelling through the Blue Mountains on April 29, 1970, when their train struck the log, which became stuck under the front wheels. But the train was not moving fast enough to beco-me derailed. It slid about 200 yards before coming to a stop. <br /><br />McHardy, who investigated the incident, said markings at the scene suggested the log had been deliberately placed on the tracks. <br /><br />Claiming that the police were ordered to keep details quiet to avoid embarrassing Australia, McHardy said he finally spoke out in an attempt to crack the case. "It was one of the big regrets of my police service," he said. <br />The royal family declined comment.
