The UN Security Council created the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) on March 24, 2005, in response to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement had signed on January 9, 2005.

The missions assigned to UNMIS include aiding in the execution of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, carrying out specific duties concerning humanitarian relief, safeguarding and advancing human rights, and providing assistance to the African Union Mission in Sudan.
