A Saudi woman has been sentenced to ten lashes for defying the nation's ban on women driving. u00a0 Shaima Ghassaniya was found guilty of driving without the government's permission, the Daily Mail reports. u00a0 The ruling comes just two days after Saudi King Abdullah's announcement that women will have the right to vote and run in the country's 2015 local elections. u00a0 According to the paper many other women have been detained for several days for violating the driving ban, but had not been sentenced by a court. u00a0 In May, as pro-democracy protests swept the region, some women in Saudi Arabia called for the right to drive. u00a0 A campaign dubbed Women2Drive issued calls on social media such as Twitter and Facebook to challenge the ban.
