California is once again in flames — this time, it’s the Gifford Fire scorching more than 82,000 acres across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. But how do these wildfires start, and why do they spread so quickly? The Gifford Fire, has exploded across Central California, burning over 82,000 acres in less than five days. Originating from four separate ignitions that merged along a highway, the blaze is raging through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, threatening more than 870 structures. With only 7% containment, authorities have issued widespread evacuation orders, warning residents of erratic fire behavior and rapidly shifting conditions. Over 1,900 personnel are battling the fire under extreme heat and rugged terrain, supported by air tankers, helicopters, and bulldozers.
