WR opens temporary foot over bridge at Mumbai Central station in just 6 months

WR opens temporary foot over bridge at Mumbai Central station in just 6 months

A temporary lightweight steel foot over bridge has been built at Mumbai Central station to improve east-west connectivity after the Bellasis bridge was closed in June 2024. The old structure which was built in 1893 and had exceeded its expected lifespan of 100 years,  was declared dangerous as it was not in a good condition and had surpassed its expected lifespan. Commuters had been facing difficulties due to the bridge's closure, which affected their daily travel. The new foot over bridge which includes plans for escalators, was completed in just six months which indeed is a remarkable achievement. This bridge marks a significant step for Mumbai, as it is the first of its kind built temporarily in response to a need for better pedestrian access. The Flyover bridge connects the station’s eastern side with the western side, allowing passengers to cross over the railway lines easily. It starts from the station approaching outside the ticket area and ends at JBB Road in Tardeo. The construction process was efficient. Workers fabricated the steel girders and columns at the same time as they dug the foundations, which sped up the project. The steel columns were erected in just two days, and it took four days to set up the cross girders. Thanks to prior trials, the assembly at the site took only three days, and the entire bridge was put up in a single day using a large crane. Instead of traditional reinforced concrete, the deck is made from a chequered plate, which saves a lot of time. This choice avoided the lengthy process of reinforcement and curing that concrete requires. The side railings and deck plate were installed at the same time, and the staircase was prefabricated to further speed up the work. Lighting was installed in just one day.

Gokhale Bridge-Barfiwala flyover finally connected

Gokhale Bridge-Barfiwala flyover finally connected

The misalignment between Mumbai’s Barfiwala flyover and the new Gokhale bridge has been corrected. A few months ago - this bridge was a matter of embarrassment to the authorities and disappointment to the commuters. On February 26th, when the new Gokhale bridge was partially reopened to the public, it was a matter of joy to the Andheri residents. Until it was found out that there was a huge gap between the CD Barfiwala flyover and the new Gokhale bridge. The flyover and the Gokhale bridge did not align. This blunder was a big nemesis for people travelling from Juhu. They were forced to navigate through the SV road which is a hotspot of traffic jams. Today, the CD Barfiwala flyover connecting the new Gokhale bridge is officially reopening for the public to use after the realignment of the Gokhale Bridge-Barfiwala flyover and here is why it matters a lot to the Mumbaikars.
