India-Maldives Relations: S Jaishankar will pay an official visit to Maldives

EAM Dr S Jaishankar is scheduled to pay an official visit to the Maldives from August 09 to 11. The visit aims to strengthen the partnership between the two countries following strained ties with the island country in January. Post his visit in Jan 2023, this is EAM’s first visit to the island after taking charge of the office for the second term. Bilateral tension soared between the nations after President Mizzu demanded removal of 88 Indian military personnel from Maldives.The tension further escalated after 3 Maldivian Dy ministers made derogatory comments against PM Modi over his Lakshadweep visit. On June 09, this year,  Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu paid a visit to India for the swearing in ceremony of the new Cabinet. EAM Jaishankar’s will focus on strengthening bilateral relationships and propelling India’s ‘Neighbourhood first policy.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on March 08 snubbed the ‘double standard allegations against India. He was told that India has not criticised Russia in the country’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine and people think of it as “double st andards” of India. To this, Jaishankar sharply replied and said, “We in India know better than almost any other country. Because immediately after our independence, we experienced aggression. We experienced an effort to change our boundaries and even today, parts of India are occupied by another country. But we did not see the world responds saying that there’s a great principle involved and therefore let us all go with India. Yes, today we are being told that there are principles involved. I wish I had seen that principle in play for the last 80 years. I have seen those principles cherry-picked when suits people and not when it does not suit people.” S Jaishankar’s Japan Visit is scheduled from March 6 to 8.

S. Jaishankar attended the Munich Security Conference from 16-18 February in Germany. During his visit, the external affairs minister defended India's long term standing ties with Russia. In an interview with  a leading German economic daily, Handelsbatt EAM highlighted. He said that Russia has never violated our interests. He said the many Western countries used to supply arms to Pakistan and not India..adding that the trend has changed in the past decade. Notably during a panel discussion in multilateralism at MSC.EAM reaffirmed India's stand to buy Russian oil despite sanctions.
