Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has officially proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. In a communication to the government, CJI Chandrachud indicated that he will be retiring in November, paving the way for Justice Khanna to take over as the 51st Chief Justice of India. Upon receiving government approval, Justice Khanna will assume office and serve a term of six months, concluding in May 2025. This brief tenure aligns with the mandatory retirement age of 65 for Supreme Court judges. Justice Khanna`s appointment is expected to bring continuity and stability to the apex court during this transitional period. His extensive experience and legal acumen will be crucial as he prepares to lead the judiciary in India, addressing key challenges and upholding the rule of law.

At the Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul’s Farewell, CJI Chandrachud congratulated Justice Kaul for his enormous contribution to Indian judiciary especially in the Article 370 repeal case. Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul stressed the need for the judges to exhibit boldness, since they have Constitutional protection.
