Fifteen thousand nurses are on strike in New York City for a second day, marking one of the largest nursing walkouts in the city’s history. The strike began after contract negotiations collapsed, with nurses demanding safer staffing levels, better pay, protection from workplace violence, and the preservation of healthcare benefits and pensions. Hospital management has rejected the demands, calling them financially unsustainable, while bringing in temporary and travel nurses to keep services running.  

Thousands of nurses across New York City have walked off the job after contract negotiations with major hospital systems failed to reach an agreement. Nearly 15,000 nurses are participating in what is being described as one of the largest nursing strikes in the city’s history.
