05 September,2023 08:16 PM ISTIndependence Day 2023 | Indian cinema's origin traces back to the pre-Independence era, with Dadasaheb Phalke pioneering it after being inspired by 'The Life of Christ.' His silent film 'Raja Harishchandra' (1913) marked its start, later transitioning to 'talkies' with 'Alam Ara' (1931). Mumbai emerged as a filmmaking hub, birthing hits like 'Devdas' and 'Anarkali.' Cinema became a platform for anti-British sentiment during the freedom struggle. The Golden Era (1940s-1960s) brought parallel cinema, e.g., Satyajit Ray's 'Apu Trilogy,' and Guru Dutt's 'Pyaasa.' From silent origins to a social, nationalist, and artistic force, Indian cinema's journey, epitomized by Phalke's vision and diverse narratives, shaped its impactful cultural legacy.
