Himachal Pradesh: Cloudbursts result in landslides and extensive destruction

The state of Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with severe landslides and damage which has resulted from incessant rains in the region. Relief and rescue operations are in progress in Samej village near Rampur in Shimla district after severe cloudbursts struck various areas of Himachal Pradesh. The resulting landslides have caused extensive damage and destruction throughout the hill station. Several rescue team members have been trapped due to impassable roads, hindering their efforts to carry out rescue and recovery tasks. So far, six people have lost their lives in this devastating landslide. On August 1st, parts of the Kullu-Manali Highway were washed away in the cloudburst. Restoration work is currently underway.

IMD had predicted that Mumbai would likely receive heavy rainfall at isolated places for three days starting Friday 2nd August along with heavy rainfall at isolated areas in Thane. Andheri Subway was shut down for commuters due to waterlogging. On the other hand, city's seven lakes have already crossed 80% capacity as Mumbai's water levels have risen significantly.

After the flash floods triggered by cloudbursts in many districts of Himachal Pradesh, rescue and research operations to save lives are still on. The NDRF team successfully carried out a rescue operation and evacuated workers of the Malana Power project. NDRF inspector Prem Negi said, "Thirty-three workers of the power project have been rescued out of which four workers were stranded in the Manala tunnel...Special equipments were used to carry out the rescue operation and evacuate the victims...An 18-member team carried out the operation..."

On July 25, 2024, Mumbai rains turned out to be fatal and caused substantial disruptions and hazards throughout the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring regions, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. The non-stop rain led to widespread waterlogging in areas such as Kurla, Andheri, BKC, and Chembur. The heavy  rain significantly impacted transportation in Mumbai. Local train services are operating at reduced speeds due to poor visibility, and several trains were suspended. Flight operations at Mumbai airport are also heavily affected, with numerous flights delayed, diverted, or canceled.The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recorded 46 incidents of fallen trees and branches, six short circuits, and eight cases of property damage.

Maharashtra faced severe disruption on July 25 due to heavy rainfall, severely impacting daily life. Major parts of the state, including Mumbai, experienced extensive waterlogging and flooding, making commuting a challenge for residents. Mumbai rains created a huge ruckus in the city. The weather department warned of gusty winds up to 50-60 kmph alongside the heavy rains. Temperatures were moderate, ranging from 24 to 29 degrees Celsius. Mumbai was issued a yellow warning for heavy showers on the 25th of July while an orange alert was issued for Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Satara, Ratnagiri, and Pune. Sindhudurg in the Konkan region also remained on yellow alert. The situation prompted authorities to advise caution and preparedness across the affected areas.

On Friday morning, 12th July, Mumbai woke up to heavy rains across the city. The incessant rains caused severe waterlogging across several areas in the city post Mumbai Rains. Massive waterlogging was witnessed at King’s Circle in Mumbai. Visuals of the waterlogged roads from the King's Circle area surfaced online wherein authorities in reflective rain gear could be seen giving directions to the driver to steer him clear of a dangerous spot. Pedestrians and vehicles crossed heavily waterlogged streets at the King’s Circle. The latest forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rains over Mumbai and MMR areas likely in next 48 hours which may create waterlogging as rain will be consistently moderate to heavy for at least next 24-36 hours.

Mumbai city experienced intense rainfall, with over 300 mm recorded in six hours from 1 am to 7 am on July 08, as reported by the BMC. Due to the heavy rains, Mumbai witnessed massive Waterlogging in many parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for parts of central Maharashtra on July 7 and 8. Maharashtra is likely to see very heavy rainfall over the next five days. The heavy rain also led to the cancellation of some trains by the Central Railways. The BMC assured that all its departments are actively working to manage the situation. They also urged residents not to spread or trust rumors. The city's civic body emphasized the ongoing efforts to address any issues caused by the rainfall and advised everyone to stay informed through official channels for accurate updates.
