The West Bengal Assembly has recently passed 'Aparajita' Bill, marking a significant step in the fight against sexual violence. Named in response to the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical Centre, this legislation is a pioneering move by West Bengal, making it the first state to amend central laws related to sexual offenses. The bill introduces several critical reforms, including stricter penalties for rape, enhanced protection for survivors, and expedited judicial processes to ensure faster justice. It also establishes special fast-track courts dedicated to handling such cases. The West Bengal government, led by Mamata Banerjee, convened a special 2-day session to accelerate the bill's passage in response to widespread protests and public outrage. This initiative aims to address the growing demand for more robust measures against sexual crimes and to provide a stronger legal framework for the protection of women. Amid the ongoing protests in West Bengal over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, another case involving the alleged molestation of a minor girl in North 24 Parganas’s Madhyamgram has come has come to light. The minor girl's father said, "My daughter was going to the shop from home...He (accused) took my daughter to the shop and molested her. We did not see this, the person next to us told us that this was done to my daughter...When I asked my daughter about this, she said that this was done to her by beating and scaring her. I called the Panchayat member and he told us that the accused would be punished but he went to the accused's house and started supporting him...An FIR has been registered. The accused was caught at 4 am, he is in custody. We want the person who did this to my 9-year-old daughter to get the harshest punishment."
