Bangladesh were bundled out for 326, taking a 78-run first innings lead before the visitors had wiped away their deficit in the second innings on day three of the first Test.
South Africa were 61-0 with openers Dean Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl remaining unbeaten on their respective scores of 28 and 33 respectively.
Earlier on Thursday, Dale Steyn inched closer to the 400-Test wicket mark as he remained one short of reaching the milestone.
