Classy Spain sour Beckham's special night

David Beckham admitted any personal glory was outweighed by England's 2-0 defeat in Spain yesterday.

The midfielder came on as a half-time substitute to equal Bobby Moore's record of 108 caps for a

n outfield player, but he could do little as goals in each half from David Villa and Fernando Llorente gave the hosts a merited victory in Seville.

"I've always worked hard at my game and it's what I enjoy doing, and I've had some great managers along the way.

"I'm enjoying my football and I hope it continues."

Beckham admitted Spain deserved their win. "They're always going to bring pressure and keep the ball well," he added. They got two good goals, and overall maybe they deserved the win, but we'll move on."

Charlton, who won 106 caps for England, paid tribute to Beckham's feat.

First class
"With David Beckham it's generally down to the fact that he's a really fit player and his attitude to the game has always been first class," he told ITV1.

"It's a marvellous achievement."

Meanwhile, England manager Fabio Capello was unhappy that his side failed to put Spain under greater pressure but recognised that they were always likely to struggle against opponents who have now put together a 29-match unbeaten run including 27 wins.

"I think this game was very important for us," Capello said. "We played against one of the best teams in the world and we knew the difficulties that we would have to meet during the game.

"I learned a lot of things about my team that will help for the next games we have to play for World Cup qualification."
