But the groom-to-be Peter Sanders was over the moon that his friend would eventually get to live a dream he has long cherished. "It's a pretty decent excuse," Sanders was quoted as saying in The Age yesterday.
The 29-year-old opener, who was drafted into the side in place of out-of-form Phil Hughes, though had planned to "sink a few tinnies" at his friend's party on the opening day of the first Test on December 26.
His friend Sanders though hoped that Australia would have a cakewalk on the final day and his friend would be available for the party. "If they're chasing 200 on Day Five they can knock them over quickly and make it for the wedding. He'll be there in spirit," he joked.
Sanders, however, announced that he and his friends were pretty keen to witness Cowan's debut at the MCG. "The guys said they were pretty keen to go to the Boxing Day Test on Day One and I thought it was a pretty good idea," Sanders said.
