Triple treat: Test cricketers who scored the first triple ton for their countries

Former cricketer Hanif Mohammad was the first Pakistan player to score a triple century in Tests for his country. On his birth anniversary, let's look at batsmen who were the first to score a triple hundred for their respective countries

Former cricketer Hanif Mohammad was the first Pakistan player to score a triple century in Tests for his country. On his birth anniversary, let's look at batsmen who were the first to score a triple hundred for their respective countries.

Country - Pakistan. Opposition - West Indies. Fours - 24. Sixes - none. Date - 17 January 1958.
Hanif became the first Asian to score a triple century. He built strong partnerships with batsmen as Pakistan declared with 657 on board. Hanif played for an astonishing 970 minutes - the longest innings in Test cricket history. West Indies put up a tough fight with Everton Weekes and Conrad Hunte scoring big centuries that helped draw the 6-day Test.


Don Bradman - 334

Country - Australia. Opposition - England. Fours - 46. Sixes - none. Date - 11 July 1930.
'The Don' was the second batsman to score a triple century and created the highest individual score at the time. His second and third wicket stands with Bill Woodfull and Alan Kippax respectively proved fruitful. This remains the only instance where a batsman score a triple Test hundred in a single day. The match ended in a draw. 


Andy Sandham
Country - England. Opposition - West Indies. Fours - 28. Sixes - none. Date - 3 April 1930.
The first triple hundred scored in Tests. Sandham went on to build efficient partnerships for the first, second and fourth wickets as England posted a massive 849 runs. The match ended in a draw but Sandham created history. At 39 years, he is still the oldest triple ton scorer in Tests. This was Sandham's last Test match.

Country - Sri Lanka. Opposition - India. Fours - 36. Sixes - 2. Date - 2 August 1997.
The Lankan batsman put on a mammoth partnership of 576 runs along with Roshan Mahanama who scored a double century. Sri Lanka declared at 952 runs for 6 wickets which is the highest team total in Test history. Although, the match was drawn, these innings will be remembered.

Country - India. Opposition - Pakistan. Fours - 39. Sixes - 6. Date - 28 March 2004.
Sehwag became the first and only Indian cricketer to score a Test triple century. His partnership with Sachin Tendulkar was another highlight of the match as Sachin scored an unbeaten 194. Sehwag reached his triple ton in trademark style by hitting a six and remains the only cricketer to do so ever. India won by an innings and 52 runs. 

Garry Sobers - 365*

Country - West Indies. Opposition - Pakistan. Fours - 38. Sixes - none. Date - 26 February 1958.
The West Indies veteran scored his first ever century in Tests and in style. He also went on to hold the record for highest individual test score for 36 years before Brian Lara broke it. West Indies won the match by a huge margin of an innings and 174 runs. 

Hashim Amla - 311*

Country - South Africa. Opposition - England. Fours - 35. Sixes - none. Date - 19 July 2012.
Amla shared important partnerships with Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis. He became the first and only Proteas cricketer to score a triple century. South Africa went on to win the match by an innings and 12 runs. 

Brendon McCullum - 302

Country - New Zealand. Opposition - India. Fours - 32. Sixes - 4. Date - 14 February 2014.
McCullum became the first and only Kiwi cricketer to score a triple hundred in Tests. In the match he and Watling put on a record partnership of 352 runs for the sixth wicket. This is only the second instance ever, where a triple century was scored in the second innings after Hanif Mohammad.
