Anonymous sources posted the hoax news story, which claimed that the superstar had been killed in a 95mph smash in California, reports the Daily Star.
The report said the 36-year-old England ace lost control while driving a friend's car on the Interstate 80, one of the longest roads in North America.
The car was reported to have turned over and rolled 'several times' before coming to a stop.
According to reports, the LA Galaxy star was 'instantly dead from severe head trauma'.
Though the 'news' started spreading like wildfire on social network sites including Twitter, upsetting thousand of fans, the claims soon got rumbled after he himself came out for his LA Galaxy side in a match against Alajuelense in Costa Rica.
The report sparked a huge backlash against the culprits behind the hoax on website Global Associated News, with many expressing their disgust on Twitter and Facebook.
