England captain Charlotte Edwards knows inconsistency is to blame for her side's failure to defend their Women's World Cup title as they prepare for today's third-place play-off against New Zealand
England finished the Super Sixes stage with a 15-run win over the White Ferns but it was not enough to book their place in the final after the West Indies pulled off a shock win over Australia to join them in the tournament’s showpiece.

Instead, England will play New Zealand again after their tournament did not quite go to plan following their opening-game defeat by Sri Lanka and Super Six loss to Australia.
Edwards acknowledged the fight for third was not the match she had hoped to be playing. “I’m very proud of the way we’ve ended this match, but obviously bitterly disappointed in the grand scheme,” Edwards told ecb.com after the win over New Zealand.
“It’s our own fault. Our inconsistency up front in the tournament has cost us and we’re probably playing or best cricket now,” she added.
“For the last two weeks it’s been a rollercoaster for this team and we’ve dealt with it brilliantly. It’s just disappointing that it’s all ended but I’m very proud of the England dressing room right now.
“It’s always a good contest between us and the Kiwis. We need to play for third-place. We want to win every game England play. This won’t change.”
Sarah Taylor hit 88 in the win over New Zealand, giving her a much-needed boost ahead of today’s rematch following three successive ducks in the competition.
Taylor said: “It’s been a tough tournament for me and it’s actually nice to contribute.
“It was just a little too late in terms of the competition. But it was nice to put runs on the board and help the team get into a position and the girls at the end did brilliantly as well.
“We’re just looking forward to the next game.”u00a0
